STSM Testimonial: Cantonese data collection at Hong Kong Polytechnique University

Peizheng Wu is a second-year Master student at University of Zurich, specializing in psycholinguistics. Her research interest lies at psycholinguistics and mental health. During her research stay at Hong Kong Polytechnique University (14/09/2025-14/10/2025, hosted by Yu-Yin Hsu), she worked on the implementation of the MultiplEYE experiment, covering both eye-tracking sessions and psychometric tests.

During mid-September to mid-October, I had quite an amazing, wonderful, and insightful research stay at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The previous exchange student from PolyU to Zurich, Junlin Li, gave me the first warm welcome on the second day I arrived in Hong Kong. The red brick walls, green grass and trees, blue sky, and the tropical climate in PolyU are really refreshing, and the friendly people, delicious food, as well as the academic
atmosphere also sparked everything in my university life.

Thanks to my host, Yu-Yin Hsu, who has given me continuous help and support, I was able to know a group of amazing people, friendly, interesting, and innovative, whom I would now call friends. In the first week I arrived, I met my colleagues in our first group meeting, in which I introduced the current Cantonese MultiplEYE Project, exchanged opinions with peers, listened to the inspiring talks, got suggestions, and discussed potential future
collaborations with my new teammates. I was greatly inspired by various research interests across different people, which are novel, insightful, and very helpful for me to navigate my future exploration in various fields.

My work has been progressing with lots of fluctuations, however continuously made achievements with the strongest backup support. The lab manager, Jonah Lack, was always by my side to solve countless technical issues; my colleague, Lavinia, accompanied and assisted me with incredibly helpful advice when the experiment went
into trouble. My supervisor and teammates in Zurich also remotely supported me in many aspects. I am also truly thankful for other students in the lab who voluntarily spread the advertisement; and for the participants who are usually patient, thoughtful, and willing to coordinate. It was a huge success with collaboration from various sides.

All in all, what I want to say is thank you, thanks to MultiplEYE for giving me such a wonderful chance to experience an incredible journey, and thanks to PolyU for giving me the warmest welcome and various opportunities. I believe we will reunite someday – looking forward to seeing you all again in the future!
