Omer Shubi is a PhD student in Data Science at the Technion Israel Insitute of Technology. His research interests are focused on the intersection of Natural Language Processing, Psycholinguistics & Cognitive Science. His STSM completed at the Department of Computational Linguistics, University of Zurich from 12/01/2024 to 01/02/2024 focused on aspects of piloting and refining a methodology for generating and evaluating comprehension questions, specifically tailored for MultiplEYE.
My Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) to the Digital Linguistics group led by Professor Lena Jäger at the University of Zurich, as part of the MultiplEYE project, proved to be an incredibly rewarding experience, both professionally and personally. During the visit, I gained firsthand insights into running eye-tracking experiments and engaged in many fruitful discussions about eye movements in reading and their theoretical and practical applications. The collaborative environment brought up new ideas and perspectives that I’m excited to continue working on.
During the STSM, I not only deepened my understanding of the MultiplEYE project and how I can contribute to it, but I also had the opportunity to join the ZurichNLP community, attending a nearby meetup and a department-wide research exposure day, which further exposed me to new research and connected me to the research community in Zurich.
Beyond Zurich’s natural charm, one of the highlights of my stay was experiencing the city’s beautiful surrounding nature. One evening it started snowing, and kept snowing all night. I woke up the following morning to a city covered in snow, under a clear blue sky. It was truly amazing. Using the city’s convenient public transportation, I went on a spontaneous hike to Uetliberg, Zurich’s nearby mountain. The climb in the snow and the view from the top were stunning. Making good use of the fine weather, Lena and Deborah invited me to join them for a Sunday hike on an even larger, snow-covered mountain, which proved to be even more impressive and memorable!
I am grateful for the opportunity to visit the Digital Linguistics group in Zurich, collaborating with them and experiencing their delicate balance of hard work in a pleasant environment.
